about me

Gianni Arena - when music lives

I was born in Piazza Armerina (Sicily) on 23.12.1970.
I am thankful to my brothers, for letting me discover the musical talent which was in me.
When I was a child I loved playing on a keg of a detergent, and it was my first (and last) drum.
I say this because later on I dedicated myself to play keyboards, starting to learn on an old (at that time new) Bontempi-keyboard of those who pressing a button on the left it gave me automatically the cords, while I could play the melody being helped by numbers written on a book.
Then one day I've had enough buttons to press and I decided to learn (with the “help” from my brothers) how the cords are formed.
More time passed and the more I realized that it was enough to hear a song and then just play it without having to learn to read notes as others used to do.

I spent my childhood playing the keyboard in some bands, but at the same time I was interested in other instruments like drums, bass and guitar.
I started writing a couple of songs that in contrast to those made in my "last months” were more listenable but were not perfect as I liked to. Time passed and I had a strong interest for learning to play piano and I started playing in bars and restaurants. I remember I was always happy when I get confirmed some evening (I was so excited that I would even refuse the gage, but luckily they did not notice it). Playing piano gave me the opportunity to develop a feeling of dynamics and musical expression that I didn’ t had by playing the keyboard.
I composed more songs but since they were not as good arranged as I wished, I play them just for myself.
It was my desire to produce finally a CD but it was just an idea, nothing more. I finally produced a home-made Cd but only because my musical imagination and my financial situation made it possible for me, especially with the 'help of God who I love infinitely'. I´  m sure, He’ s given me inspiration, without which my songs, especially those who speak of Him, wouldn’ t had that sound that actually they have.

Education
The school has never been important to me but actually I owe a lot to my school education and I realize that many details of my texts could never been written without that “sitting-time” in the classroom.
I graduated as an expert in corporate and correspondent in foreigners languages.
After a year or more of living in Germany and after I learned the German language, I quietly studied as an agent of shipping and after I successed in that, I worked for a little company over a year in a shipment.

Musical experiences

- When I was a child I often went to see the festivities at the hotel where my father worked and there I always hoped that the playing band could let me play a song.
I remember especially once I sang a song playing on the drums (until then I never played any song on drums) and I managed very well. Somebody (a German guy) took some photo of me, but unfortunately even though he had promised to send me them, it didn’ t happend. I would have gladly seen those pictures.

- In addition to school I happened to co-organize some parties

- I also did the announcer in local radio, I remember that even if I had still a child's voice in any case I wanted to be part of a radio, but after some casting failed, I finally could do that.

- In the church I attended before, I was responsible of the music

- I've played in several bars, restaurants, etc. in Italy, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

- One of the most important musical experiencee in of my life as musician, I did it in a bar in Mannheim (Germany) where once a week played an.American pianist. I used to play also in that bar "Schroeder 's". This pianist taught me indirectly (but then later also directly) how music can be played with the deepest of your heartand of your soul. The name of that person was Rev. Lee Brown.

Important dates
- In 1998 I had the opportunity, (winning the competition for living Italian artists in Germany) to sing in a casting in Switzerland (Biasca), where I also was among the winner. Winning that casting gave me the chance to participate in the “Accademia di Sanremo”. This could give me the opportunity to get fame in Italy without any direct help of record companies, being a competitor in the Sanremo Festival (most populare singers competition in Italy). Even if I knew how this would end up it was a great experience for me anyway.

- Since November 1998 I had the opportunity to thank God and also thanking the availability and the confidence it gave me Juliane, my wife, to work with the music. Having left a secure job and devote myself to something uncertain how the 'art of the Piano-Bar. It was not easy but as I said without my wife’ s support I would never have reached the goals I have achieved so far
